Book Review: The Extraordinary Life of Max Bulandi

Book Review: The Extraordinary Life of Max Bulandi

This book takes readers on a fascinating journey into the chaotic world of sex, drugs, and rock ’n’ roll, all set against the backdrop of India’s changing times. At its heart, it tells the story of Max Bulandi, a man whose charm and unpredictable life left a lasting impact on everyone he met. It also follows Nirvana, a struggling journalist who sets out to uncover Max’s story and ends up discovering much more.

Nirvana is at a low point in his life. After his long-term girlfriend leaves him, his career stalls, and his old drug addiction resurfaces. One day, while sorting through old magazines, he stumbles across a 1970s issue of Junior Standard. An article about a rock band called The Flow and its lead singer Max Bulandi catches his attention. Curious and desperate for direction, Nirvana decides to learn more about Max. His search takes him from Mumbai to Kolkata, Shillong, and Banaras as he pieces together Max’s life through interviews with the people who knew him best.

The story unfolds through the perspectives of Max’s bandmates, ex-girlfriend, childhood friends, and even journalists who covered his rise to fame. Each person sheds light on a different part of Max’s life—from his early days as Makrand to his transformation into Maximus Boulandie, the rock star, and later to the many other personas he adopted. These stories show Max as a brilliant yet flawed man whose life was full of ups and downs.

What makes this book stand out is its setting. It paints a vivid picture of India from the 1950s to the 1970s, capturing the excitement, hope, and chaos of those decades. The story takes readers into the world of the 70s hippie culture, exploring the rise of rock music, drug use, and the social changes of the time. Max’s journey through places like Amsterdam, Istanbul, Kathmandu, and Goa adds an adventurous touch, giving readers a glimpse of the global counterculture movement.

I never thought or realised how such period and life can be and it can be related to rock and roll music. To feel and live those moments in that period and period through these words was great experience to have. It was really thought provoking overall.

However, the book can feel overwhelming at times. It goes into a lot of detail. While some readers might enjoy this, others might find it too much. A simpler, shorter version of the story might have made it more engaging for a wider audience.

In the end, this book is a fascinating look at an extraordinary life. Max Bulandi is a mix of hero and antihero—a man who inspires and frustrates in equal measure. Whether you’re a fan of rock music, historical fiction, or character-driven stories, this book has something unique to offer. It’s a gripping and emotional journey, though it might not appeal to everyone. For those willing to dive in, it’s an unforgettable ride through the life of a complex and charismatic man.
